A Canon of English Literature

I'll admit that Brontë's sisters never leave us disappointed, they know how to keep us engaged!

Everything they wrote is a masterpiece. And Jane Eyre is one of the best books I have ever read.

It is written by Charlotte Brontë, published in 1847. This novel is a classic bestseller well received by the audience but unappreciated by the Victorian who were deranged by Jane Eyre fierceness.

Jane Eyre's character inspired me to be real, to be me in any circumstances.

What is it about?

This novel is an autobiography of a woman named Jane Eyre. In the book, we follow her journey, from her childhood to her adulthood during which she meets M. Rochester, an Englishman who owns a castle in Thornfield-Hall that hides destructive secrets. A journey that will inspire dozens of women.

My experience of this novel, SPOILER ALERT :

Jane Eyre is a book that is very well known in the history of literature and I consider myself lucky to enjoy the writing art of Charlotte brontë. She is an author who is well known for her gothic atmosphere stories. As always the Brontë sisters never forget to make us drown in their old time universe. Each paysage and movement is painted by such sharp and beautiful words. It's a novel-to-read if you want to improve your vocabulary.

I have only one complaint : I think that the period she spent in the boarding school of lowood. Itl was a bit dull. It is not that interesting but I can understand why it is there. It shows us another facet of her personality, when she is away from her family members.

Mrs Brontë has created a female character who has become in our days a very inspirational figure. Jane Eyre is a woman that I would describe by the word "naked", she has always conserved her honesty and bluntness that outshined her surroundings hypocrisy. Plus, she seems to be very self aware because Jane was never portrayed as a breathtaking beauty but more like a person who walks confidently with her imperfections on her sleeves.

Concerning the love story, I fervently rooted for Jane and Rochester to end up together despite the things he had done to her. But now, I have a more objective perception on it :

She never deserved to be treated that way. Although they loved each other sincerely, I think that Rochester's acts were not acceptable. He was hiding her “devilish crazy wife” for years in a room of his immense glory walls.

(There is a novel ``Wide Sargasso Sea`` by Jean Ryhs that is the version of the "madwoman" story. It's worth your time, trust me. You can read my review of that book here :

Jane succeeded to put aside her heart objections to defend her self-respect and her dignity.

I have also noticed one thing about Rochester's character : he was victimized at the end of the book. Charlotte Brontë made it look like he was the only one who got scattered by the separation and that he deserved to be forgiven. I think that Jane did what she had to do. She came back when he was in a vulnerable position to help him collect himself again. I'm really touched by their love that is beautifully portrayed : he loved her wholly and she loved him unconditionally. Still self-respect comes first and she proved it to us!!!

I would like to wrap this up by saying that Jane Eyre is a novel that you can read over and over again, you won't wear out. Self-respect, dignity and infinite love are the main topics that are cleverly explored.

I highly recommend it to you!

Some quotes that would probably grasp your attention:

"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will." - Jane Eyre

“Every atom of your flesh is as dear to me as my own: in pain and sickness it would still be dear. Your mind is my

treasure, and if it were broken, it would be my treasure still.”
